How to recognise it

Large mophead flowerhead made up of many small clustered florets
Sturdy thick stem that can feel woody at the base
Broad, coarsely toothed, glossy mid-green leaves in opposite pairs
Florets feel papery to slightly crisp compared to other cut flowers
Individual florets often have four or five petal-like sepals

Care

Strip all leaves below the waterline as they wilt fast and foul the water. Recut stems at an angle under water and consider splitting or crushing the base to aid uptake. Hydrangeas drink heavily, so check and top up water levels daily. Mist the flowerheads lightly and keep away from direct heat and draughts; they are not notably ethylene sensitive but wilt quickly if dehydrated.
