How to recognise it

Large mophead flower cluster made of many small florets
Thick, slightly woody, hollow stem
Broad, serrated, glossy mid-green leaves in opposite pairs
Florets feel papery to the touch when mature
Cluster head is dome or ball shaped

Care

Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline, as hydrangea leaves wilt the stem fast by drawing water from the head. Recut stems underwater or smash/split the stem ends to improve water uptake. Use fresh water with flower food and keep well hydrated at all times, as hydrangea is very prone to wilting. If a head wilts, submerge the whole flower head in water for an hour to revive it.
