How to recognise it

Large mophead flower cluster made of many small florets
Florets have 4 overlapping papery petals each
Thick, hollow, woody stem
Large, coarse, serrated oval leaves
No noticeable scent

Care

Strip all leaves below the waterline and recut stems at an angle under water. Hydrangeas drink heavily, so keep the vase topped up and consider a floral preservative. Some florists dip stem ends briefly in boiling water or alum to help uptake. Avoid placing near ethylene sources and keep away from draughts and direct heat.
