How to recognise it

Large mophead flowerhead made of many small florets
Thick, slightly woody, hollow stem
Broad, coarsely toothed, glossy dark green leaves in opposite pairs
Papery texture of individual florets
Stem often splits or crushed at base

Care

Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Recut stems at an angle and consider splitting or crushing the base to aid water uptake. Keep in deep, cool water and mist the flowerheads to prevent wilting. Hydrangeas are thirsty and not ethylene sensitive, but drink heavily and need topping up often.

Easy to confuse with

Hydrangea paniculata – conical panicle, not round mophead
Viburnum opulus – similar rounded clusters but smaller individual florets and different leaf shape
