How to recognise it

Large mophead flower cluster made of many small florets
Florets have papery, slightly veined petals
Thick, sturdy stem with large serrated oval leaves
Woody base to the stem
Flower head feels dense and dome-shaped

Care

Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline and recut the stem at an angle under water. Hydrangeas drink heavily, so give them deep water and top up often; some florists also dip or spray the heads to help uptake. Keep away from strong heat and direct sun, and avoid ethylene exposure. A floral preservative helps extend vase life.
