How to recognise it

Large mophead flower cluster made of many small papery florets
Thick, sturdy woody stem
Broad, serrated, glossy leaves in opposite pairs
Florets can feel papery rather than soft petalled
Stem may feel slightly hollow or pithy when cut

Care

Recut stems under water and split or crush the lower few centimetres to help uptake. Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Keep in deep, cool water and mist the heads if they start to droop. Hydrangea is sensitive to water stress, so top up water levels frequently and avoid letting the bucket run dry.
