How to recognise it

Large mophead flower clusters made of many small florets
Sturdy woody stem, often thick and hairy
Broad, serrated, glossy mid-green leaves
Florets feel papery rather than soft petalled
Cluster can be domed or slightly flattened

Care

Strip all leaves below the waterline as they wilt fast and draw water from the bloom. Recut stems underwater and consider splitting or crushing the stem base to aid water uptake. Use a deep drink of fresh water with flower food and keep well hydrated at all times, misting the heads helps. Keep away from direct heat and draughts; hydrangeas are sensitive to ethylene only mildly but wilt quickly if they dry out.
