How to recognise it

Large mophead flower cluster made of many small florets
Big rounded or heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges, slightly glossy
Thick, woody-green stem that can be hollow
Florets feel papery to the touch when mature

Care

Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle under water. Hydrangeas drink heavily, so keep them in deep, cool water and top up often; dipping or spraying the flower heads with water helps prevent wilting. They are sensitive to air in the stem, so some florists also dip the cut end briefly in alum or boiling water. Keep away from direct heat and draughts.
