How to recognise it

Large mophead flower cluster made of many small florets
Thick, woody, somewhat brittle stem
Broad, serrated, glossy mid-green leaves in opposite pairs
Florets feel papery and slightly dry to the touch
Flower head wilts quickly if stem is not conditioned

Care

Strip all leaves below the waterline as they draw water away from the bloom. Recut stems at an angle under water and consider dipping or splitting the stem end to improve uptake. Hydrangea drinks heavily, so keep vases topped up and mist the heads if they look limp. Keep away from direct sun and heat; it is not very ethylene sensitive but benefits from cool conditions.
