How to recognise it

Dense upright flower spikes with multiple tightly packed florets
Florets can be single or double, often ruffled petals
Thick, soft, slightly fleshy stem
Grey-green, elongated leaves with a soft felty texture
Strong, sweet, clove-like fragrance

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle before placing in clean water. Change water every couple of days as matthiola can foul it quickly. Keep away from ripening fruit and other ethylene sources, as it is sensitive to ethylene. Store cool but not cold, away from direct sun and draughts.
