How to recognise it

  • Dense spike of tightly packed small four-petalled florets
  • Grey-green, slightly fuzzy lance-shaped leaves along the stem
  • Sturdy, somewhat woody and hairy stem
  • Strong, sweet clove-like scent
  • Lower florets open first, buds at the tip

Care

Strip any foliage that would sit below the waterline and recut stems at an angle before placing in fresh water. Use flower food and keep water clean, as stems are prone to bacterial blockage. Keep away from ripening fruit and other ethylene sources, as florets drop quickly once exposed. Keep in a cool spot out of direct sun and draughts.

Easy to confuse with

  • Hesperis matronalis (dame's rocket) – looser spikes, less fragrant
  • Other Matthiola cultivars – differ mainly in colour and spike density
