How to recognise it

  • Double, peony-like bloom with many petals per flower
  • Sturdy round stem, slightly curves toward light
  • Smooth broad grey-green leaves sheathing the stem
  • Closed buds tighter and rounder than single tulips
  • No strong scent

Care

Recut stems at an angle and remove any foliage that sits below the waterline. Use cool, clean water and change it every one to two days. Tulips continue to grow and stretch in the vase, so keep stems supported and away from direct heat. Keep away from ripening fruit and other ethylene sources.

Easy to confuse with

  • Other double early tulip cultivars
  • Double late (peony) tulips – larger bloom, later season
