How to recognise it

Smooth, upright stem with a waxy bluish-green bluish bloom
Single closed cup-shaped bud at the tip, petals tightly overlapped
Broad, fleshy, slightly twisted leaves sheathing the lower stem
Stem continues to grow and bend towards light after cutting
No strong scent

Care

Recut stems at an angle and place in cool, shallow water as tulips keep drinking and the stems can split. Remove any leaves that sit below the waterline. Keep away from direct heat and strong draughts, and avoid mixing with daffodils unless the latter have been conditioned separately, as daffodil sap can shorten tulip vase life. Tulips keep growing and bending towards light in the vase, so turn or support arrangements as needed.
